A12.3 Location and Content of UDS Files

A12.3.1 Overview

This section provides detailed information about the location and content of each of the data sets currently accessible through the UDS, which include the following instruments:

• magnetometer (VHM/FGM)
• solar wind plasma experiment (SWOOPS)
• solar wind ion composition instrument (SWICS)
• energetic particle instrument (EPAC)
• low-energy ion and electron experiment (HISCALE)
• cosmic ray and solar particle instrument (COSPIN)

Data from the unified and radio plasma wave (URAP) and the solar X-ray and cosmic gamma-ray burst (GRB) investigations will be made available at a later date.

The UDS is in principle a distributed system with individual data sets residing on storage media managed at nominated institutes within each PI team. In cases where this is not possible, for reasons such as inadequate network connections or mass storage limitations, a temporary alternative location will be used for on-line storage. Magnetic field data are currently stored at Imperial College, London; solar wind data are kept at JPL; and COSPIN data are located at ESTEC. The remaining particle data sets (SWICS, EPAC, and HISCALE) are temporarily located at ESTEC.

Each sub-section of this section contains information for a single instrument, sub-system, or group of selected measurements. The information provided includes:

• The node¹, disk, directory and filename (of the first file in each data set, as an example) required to construct the full path name defining the file location
• The record format in the form of a FORTRAN read statement (using fixed and/or free format)
• A detailed description of the input parameters in the record format
• The time resolution
• Notes concerning the correct use of the data

¹If a VAX machine is not configured to recognize a node name, it is necessary to use the node number as an alternative.
