All tapes are labelled with a standard alpha-numeric label indicating the type of tape with some limited information as to the date, mode and generation level.
EDR and MDR tapes are labelled according to the MCCC multi-mission tape labelling plan. Labels consist of twelve characters, a six alpha character prefix followed by a five numeric character tape identifier followed by a generation code. The following codes are used:
| Project ID | U for Ulysses |
| S/C ID | A for the one ULS S/C |
| Data Mode | R = realtime P = playback N = normal (integrated realtime and playback) |
| Tape Type | E = EDR M = MDR R = Special Remote Access EDR |
| Experiment | BA = Bame = Solar Wind Plasma Experiment GL = Gloeckler/Geiss = Solar Wind Ion Experiment GR = Guren = Cosmic Dust Experiment GW = Bertotti = Gravitational WAve Experiment HE = Balogh = Magnetic Field Experiment HU = Hurley-Sommer = Solar X-Ray/Cosmic Gamma Ray Burst Experiment KE = Keppler = Energetic Particle and Interstellar Gas Experiment LA = Lanzerotti = Low Energy Ions and Electrons Experiment SI = Simpson = Cosmic Rays/Solar Particles Experiment ST = Stone = Unified Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment SC = Volland = Solar Corona Experiment |
| Generation Code | When a tape is permanently transferred out of the IPC library, a new tape is assigned in its place with the same numeric ID. The alpha generation code is incremented each time to assure that the combination of ID and generation code is always unique. |
