A12.5 Appendix: Basic VMS Commands

Assuming that the registered UDS user is logged into a home account, the following commands will allow basic file manipulation.

A listing of the files in a UDS directory can be obtained by using the VMS command DIR and specifying the complete directory path. For example, the files in the directory containing the data sets for the AT telescope of the COSPIN instrument may be listed by typing

$DIR ESTSC0::$1$DIA2:[UDS.COSPIN.AT]

to provide the following list:

Directory ESTSC0::$1$DIA2:[UDS.COSPIN.AT]

README.TXT;1 UCOSATSR91080.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91081.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91082.ULY;1
UCOSATSR91083.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91084.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91085.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91086.ULY;1
UCOSATSR91087.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91088.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91089.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91090.ULY;1
UCOSATSR91091.ULY;1 UCOSATSR91092.ULY;1 UCOSATSR910893.ULY;1 UCOSATSR910894.ULY;1
UCOSATSR91095.ULY;1

Total of 17 files.

An individual file in this directory may be displayed on the screen by typing

$TYPE ESTSC0::$1$DIA2:[UDS.COSPIN.AT]UCOSATSR91080.ULY;1

or may be edited1 (with read-only privileges) by typing (1The default VMS editor is the Digital Standard Editor (EDT); a more useful editor for files having a long record length (as is often the case for UDS files) is the Extensible VAX Editor (EVE) which can be invoked by typing EDIT/TPU):

$EDIT ESTSC0::$1$DIA2:[UDS.COSPIN.AT]UCOSATSR91080.ULY;1

The user may save the file to the home directory before leaving the editor. Alternatively, the file can first be copied to the home directory by typing

$COPY ESTSC0::$1$DIA2:[UDS.COSPIN.AT]UCOSATSR91080.ULY;1 []

and then edited.

Having proxy access to a UDS file allows data to be read directly from a program without requiring the file to be copied to the home account. FORTRAN code can use the suggested READ statements provided in the README.TXT files for each data set.
