Monthly Processing and Shipment of Data

Source: J. Eggers, 5/15/06

This section defines the procedure for downloading edryyddd.lan data from JPL, processing that data into ulayyddd.rat, ulayyddd.pha, and uafyyddd.lan files, and preparing data CDs for shipment to the Ulysses HISCALE research teams.

Downloading Data from JPL

A. Log on to KUEPAM as ULYSSES and set def to KUEPAM$DKB200:[ULYSSES.SECONDARY.WRK0.EDR]

B. Initiate ftp to JPL utilizing the command highlighted in the sample below.

$ftp jplsp3.jpl.nasa.gov
epam.ftecs.com MultiNet FTP user process V3.5(117)
Connection opened (Assuming 8-bit connections)
<jplsp3.jpl.nasa.gov MultiNet FTP Server Process V4.3(16) at Wed 24-May-2006 6:5 8AM-PDT

C. Log in to JPL. Follow the example below, utilizing the highlighted commands.

JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>lo
Foreign username: gholland
<User name (gholland) ok. Password, please.
Password: (type current password)
User GHOLLAND logged into DISK$USER1:[GHOLLAND] at Wed 24-May-2006 7:02AM-PDT,
job 20c00828..
JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>

D. Change your default directory and do a directory listing as follows:

JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>cd diskulsdmt:[ulsdmt.edr]
<Connected to DISKULSDMT:[ULSDMT.EDR].
JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>dir *.lan
<List started.

DISKULSDMT:[ULSDMT.EDR]

EDR06134.LAN;1 17604 22-MAY-2006 13:15 [ULS,ULSDMT] (RWED,RWED,RE,R)

Total of 166340 blocks in 8 files.
<Transfer completed. JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>

Check to see that the edryyddd.lan file you wish to download is present.

E. Next, if the desired edryyddd.lan is listed, it must be downloaded as a binary file (for this example, EDR06134.LAN will be utilized). The command ‘binary,’ or ‘bin,’ should be typed at the prompt. (Note: If you wish to keep track of the downloading process, utilize the hash command.) The entire downloading procedure is shown below, with the commands highlighted:

JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>hash
[Hash marks will be printed during transfers]
JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>bin
Type: Image, Structure: VMS, Mode: Stream
JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>get edr06134.lan
		To local file:<cr>
	<VMS retrieve of DISKULSDMT:[ULSDMT.EDR]EDR06134.LAN;1 (9013584 bytes) started.

<Transfer completed. 9012960 (8) bytes transferred.
JPLSP2.JPL.NASA.GOV>exit
<QUIT command received. Goodbye.

F. Utilize the exit command, as shown above, to leave the JPL site. Next give the following command to check the file sizes of the edryyddd.lan files most recently downloaded:

$dir/size/since=today

These files generally range in size from 23-25K blocks, but can go as high as 30K+ blocks during times of significant solar flare activity. Here is a sample directory listing for the above-mentioned command.

$dir/size/since=today

Directory KUEPAM$DKB200:[ULYSSES.SECONDARY.WRK0.EDR]

EDR06134.LAN;1        17604

Total of 1 file, 17604 blocks.

G. If file sizes are nominal, then processing may begin.

Next: Processing Data into ULAYYDDD.RAT, ULAYYDDD.PHA, and UAFYYDDD.LAN Files
